Ok, I should have done this last week, but it’s now time I (and others) believe is time for a “Social” events page on our great blog!!
I see this new section being used for one of two things. Firstly thinking of other activities we can do while it is raining on a Saturday and secondly for organising social evenings out. We should try and have a few more events beer nights as over the past month we have realised that it’s not just the cricket that we have missed……….
Please anyone with an idea for something to do stick it in the comments and once it looks like being finalised, I will announce it on the main section of the blog!!!!!

I propose a “blog-a-que”. It will be a very chilled out evening where I shall organise lots of sausages and beefburgers to be cooked by our resident BBQ expert Bill “not sure the flame thrower was the best way to light last years BBQ” Wileman.
We had planned to do something about it at the beginning of this month but the weather has intervened. We shall wait for a prolonged dry spell……
The idea of the evening will be for all members of the club, young and old, juniors, parents, etc to all come along and pay for the burger or hot dog as they require on the day. I really think it would be worth the juniors and the seniors getting to knwo one another. We need to meet the young upstarts who are going to rob our places off us in the future!!!
I’m not sure about pricing but I’m thinking we should be able to beat the price of cob’s behind the bar!! Any profits (should they occur) shall go directly into the beer kitty for the end of season “Bloggy Awards” ceremony, which will take place at an undecided date towards the end of the season maybe even the final league game of the season?!?!?
It is undecided because I have only just realised that there may very well be profits which need to be spent. Of course the other alternative could well be that we pump the money back into the club. We’ll have a vote!!!!
Hope that sounds ok with everyone?!
Nice one. I still remember the flame thrower last year. We could always spend the money on all year round indoor nets – it’s the only cricket most of us will have this summer.
Sounds like a good idea to me mate. BBQ’s always a good idea. Why not combine it with another event like a quiz. These are always popular and i’d be happy to organise it.
I always think Saturdays are a bit flat after the game, without a proper club house to go back to and the club having Bingo there is nowhere for 3 teams to have the usual after match banter, why not do a Barbecue/Quiz on a Saturday night during August and use the tea room (sorry small concert room).Remind everyone there is a quiz 1st friday of every month which the Cricket “Team” were runners up last week despite being handicapped with Mono and Bill. What about a race meeting (Uttoxeter has a fixture 1st Sunday in October) and go for a meal somewhere on the way back, or a night at the dogs WAGS invited of course.
I’m liking the sound of all those suggestions old yorkie.
The plan was that the Blog-a-que would be held in the “tea” room. I agree Bingo does somewhat put a dampener on banter. We’ll wait for the sun to make an appearance and sort a date……..
Racing or dog’s also sounds good.
I’m all for any activity that can be squeezed in before the end of August.
(considering what’s being squeezed out and the start of September)
Aww, you boys are so sweet …
“over the past month we have realised that it’s not just the cricket that we have missed……….”
…That brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat.
By the way, what about the WAGs? I see parents mentioned, I see juniors mentioned, what about the all-suffering WAGs? Are we not invited to this social event?! No sooner have you wlecomed us into the fold, than you are closing the door on us!
(Those afore mentioned tears look set to overspill now
)
Of course you WAG’s are invited!!!!
I apologise if you think I left you out in the cold! I did say all members of the club and as WAG’s you are included in this – at least under the blog’s constitution you are!!!!
Maybe we could aks for permission to open the bar up in the tea room (sorry i’m not as PC as the rest of you). Then we could sit and drink to our hearts content. Can’t see any objections (hmmm!!!!!). Failing that, why don’t we ask the two people who play bingo if they wouldn’t mind vacting to said tea room. Then they could dib and dab in blissful peace and quiet away from us nasty cricketers.
Seriously though some good suggestions from Oldyorkie. Lets look at the fixture list and pick a Saturday when the team away aren’t too far. August 11th looks good. Seconds are at home and firsts at Cosby.
And the thirds are at Mayflower (Oadby to you and me). An alternative venue for said BBQ could be at the home of DaddyEarthworm and WAG. Why you might ask!? Well, with the ever nearing day that Earthworm junior arrives into this very wet world he or she will require a room of their own. Alas, currently the poor blighter will be in the shed as no such room has been decorated. So it’s a paint-a-que, bring a brush, beer provided!
Liking the sound of that plan!!!!!
Seriously though, I am now banished to the house until thins thing drops, so if you need any help organising said event, then just ask. It will be a welcome disctraction from the impending blobdom / bordom I can see on the horizon!!! There has to be something other than filling my days with the inevitable blogging, facebooking, myspacing and emailing that seems to be the thing to do these days. Come to think of it, why am I still paying a phone bill??? Surely this is now a redudant communication tool soon to be only found in museums!!
Sorry, forgot I’d still need the mobile for the obligatory texting – silly me!
It’s only been one day – I think I need help already.
Liking all the ideas…..Not sure how well moving the Bingo players down to the tea room will go down with them, but I think it would be worth suggesting. I’m up for a challenge!!
Going off topic a little but does anyone know what the plan is for presentation night?! Is it going to be the same picnic feast as normal?!! Are the committee open to suggestions on that front?!?
Presentation night was discussed two meetings ago and it would seem that the status quo will be kept, although probably without as many speeches. Us on the Commitee are always open to new ideas, in fact the social sub-commitee (Dave Dimbleby) is crying out for new people. There would seem to be a couple of people on this page with a bit of time on their hands to think of new ideas for said presentation night.
If he is availablle I will try and get Paul Nixon to present the awards (I know his Testimonial chairman) but he is a busy man.It is a presentation night so you do need some speeches, last year most people thought the value was poor,Ashby road is a decent and apt venue but for basic buffet food the cost was astronomical,if people take there wife and a couple of kids it is not a cheap night. If we know the date will try and book him.
Forget the official end of season Darby and Joanathon. Whats happening for the unofficial Blogstas Awards evening Mr. Gayley?
Wal was wondering if we can look beyond a glorified cricket tea?
I haven’t really thought about the Blogster’s. Open to suggestions really Wal. Are you prepared to polish off your metro and travel or would you prefer it to be within walking distance of your humble abode?!
Suggestions, ideas for blogsters. I genuinely think the more bizarre the idea the better…..
Presentation Evening Ideas:
(1) Would it not be possible to join the entire club together for the presentation night? By that I mean the juniors and seniors! It’s just that the seniors on our own seem to rattle about in the concert room.
(2) Could we not find somewhere as a venue that is a little smaller, therefore creating a better atmosphere?!
(3) Sit down meal somewhere, and no not the Holywell!!? Maybe the Golf club!?
Only ideas….may not be of interest to anyone else.
If you are going to invite juniors, by that I mean U10/U11, then it can’t be an evening thing or last very long – they get bored and tired and parents get stressed out and hate it. I like the non-Holywell sit down meal, but agree it is not to everyones liking. Smaller venue probably would be better, but where?
Have to agree on the junior front. Need to keep the nights separate. I’m all for a sit down meal, but it can get expensive and it is already becoming a bit too late to organise it.
How many people would we be talking in terms of attending, I’m not overly sure of the rough number of people who generally attend the presentation night?! Any ideas, 50, 60, 70 or more?!?
Its usually in the region of 70 odd, but i think the relatively cheap price alllows that. A sit down meal will cost in the region of 25 quid. Not too bad if its one person, but gets expensive if you bring the WAG’s and any kids. Undoubtedly the best way to it in my opinion, but i think there would be a very mixed response.
Yeah I agree Thomas cost is obviously important. However we did end up paying a lot of money for a pretty ordinary buffet last year if I remember correctly! I suppose the question is what per person cost would the majority of people be happy to spend on a ticket to the presentation evening. If we start from there………..
I’m just trying to think what the compromise is between a sit down meal and a buffet?! And eating standing up is not an option!!!!
I might stick this particular comment in a normal post, try and get some feedback?!
Let me have a think about this. It can’t be that hard to organise a good quality buffet without breaking the bank. Someone just tell me what you had last year and what you had to pay for it.
Is there not something/someone that we can get in to cater for a limited budget, but is also going to be a decent dinner?
I am thinking something hog-roast like (I appreciate that this specific suggestion is highly reliant on summer, so don’t take the idea literally)?
Agree about the Holywell – it’s fine for the start of the year, but not presentation night.
Bready – stop volunteering! We’ll only be capable of warming through a load of jars of Cow & Gate when the presentation night comes round this year?
For the running club presentation evenings we have used The Stage Door (Concordia) for the last 2 years. It is quite small which could be positive if you don’t want to “rattle around”. Off the top of my head not sure how many they can cater for room-wise. Maybe 60? They do a really good hot sit down buffet with normally 3 dishes along lines of lasagne, veggie chilli or veg crumble, and chicken chasseur, then jackets pots, chips, salad (inc past and potato varieties as well as standard rabbit food type!) Loads of food and all very good. Then there are quite a few choices for desert too (profiter roles, gataeux, trifle, etc). The running club subsidises ours so it is £10 pp. Think it is maybe £15-20 full cost. Will the club subsidise yours? At least for the cricketers?
Just a thought anyway. If you wanted any further info I can get it for you.
You mean will the club subsidise “OURS”, you WAG folk are part of the club aswell!! I obviously can’t quote the committee or club but I think the answer to subsidies would be a no!!
I just need to mention (because I promised, and I don’t want to hurt his feelings, and not all of our esteemed readership are on FaceBook) that it was Grandad’s brithday on the 24th, and he’s having a mess night on Saturday to celebrate. Starting at the Weavers at 8 ish, then see where we get to.
Come one, come all, bring a friend or two… Surely we all know the format by now.
What’s happening with the Blog-a-que?
Depends what happens with the weather Bready. We should probably think about doign something about it soon though!!!
